Teddy and Taft
Describe how Teddy is dressed
Teddy Roosevelt is dressed like Little Bo Peep. He is in a little girl's sheep herding
dress, carrying what looks like a thick stick used to guide the sheep. On the top of the
herding stick, there seems to be some sort of a hook that almost looks like a devil's tail. It
represents "[Roosevelt's] policies".
Describe how Taft is portrayed
Taft is portrayed as Roosevelt's sheep. He is slightly bigger than an averaged size sheep,
maybe because the cartoonist wanted to emphasize Taft's weight , in case some might not have
recognized Taft by his face. Around his neck, he is wearing a bell labeled "TR", to signify that he
belongs to Roosevelt.
What is the message of this political cartoon?
The cartoonist wanted to show viewers the relationship between Roosevelt and Taft. The two were very close in the beginning of the election. Roosevelt had put his support behind Taft, due to their seemingl similar poilicies on Presidency.Roosevelt is shown here, as the sheep herder who will "herd" his sheep, Taft, in the "right direction", by using his stick of "policies" to lead the way. Taft is represented as the happy and weel cared for sheep, content under Roosevelt's care.
Why did the artist choose to characterize Teddy and Taft in this manner?
The artist chose to characterize Teddy and Taft in this manner to show that he thought of the pair as harmless. Surely a little girl and her sheep would not be of any threat. Also, it implys that Roosevelt is the main guy behind the political party. Roosevelt is controlling Taft and suiting him up for Presidency because Roosevelt promised to not run for a thrid term. He is guiding Taft with his policies and showing him the right way, along with a careful watch on him.
